    What is Compton Abbas Airfield

Located in Dorset, England, Compton Abbas is a historic airfield running 3 miles long and still in operation today. Alongside the runway is a recently redone and upscaled restaurant, which, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows, offers excellent views of the skies. Adding an interesting claim to fame, the airfield is owned by Guy Ritchie, with several nods to him featured in the decor and menu of the restaurant.

    History of the Airfield

Compton Abbas Airfield first opened in 1961. It was a popular site for both flyers and visitors by car for years, due to its beautiful location. The airfield was run by one family for over three decades, until it was acquired by Guy Ritchie in 2022.

    What's on at Compton Abbas

The airfield is open to fly-in visits, though there is strict scheduling involved. Additionally the site frequently hosts events that are open or ticketed for the public. All events can be found on the airfield calendar linked here.

    Spitfire Rides at Compton Abbas

A unique opportunity to experience a historical flight on a Spitfire is offered by a local company. At a steep price customers can fly in the historic plane for a set amount of time. This begins at 30 minutes, and you even have the chance to take control of the aircraft yourself! This experience is also offered from other small airfields across the South West. More information can be found here.

The Lore of the Sky - Smokehouse Restaurant

No flying is necessary to enjoy the airfield and meal-visitors are encouraged to drive (or fly) in for meals at the restaurant. The restaurant has been redone, both in design and food.

How to Visit Compton Abbas Airfield

    By Car

    • Compton Abbas Airfield is a 15 minute drive from the town of Shaftesbury, and Salisbury is the nearest city. Regardless of where you are coming from, the drive to the airfield requires taking rural country roads, so some caution is advised for those unfamiliar with these driving conditions.

    By Train

    • Shaftesbury does not have its own train station, but the nearest station to Compton Abbas Airfield is Gillingham Station. However, there are no good public transport options from the train station taking you to the airfield. If you choose to travel by train, you will need to book a taxi to and from the airfield. This is a 20 minute journey each way.
    • If you plan on a longer time away, we recommend taking the train to Salisbury and hiring a car as the city is home to additional exciting activities to fill your time.
